What it Means to be a Sister

Blog post by Sarah Christiansen @sarahjchristiansen

What is a sister? Merriam Webster defines sister as ‘a girl or woman regarded as a comrade’ and sisterhood as ‘the state of being a sister; sisterly relationship; the solidarity of women based on shared conditions, experiences, or concerns.’

“(The Villainettes is) family that isn’t blood. Support when you feel like you have none. Unconditional love with no judgement. A unique group of women that can make a large impact.”

Chelsea @chelsealr198

“(The Villainettes is) a family that doesn’t come from blood. Sisters near and far that I can rely on to offer support no matter the situation. A sense of belonging, and making a difference in the lives of others. Finding my niche. Unconditional love and support from women that understand, and can offer advice. Friendships for a lifetime! I am blessed to call each and every one of The Villainettes my sister!”

Steph @purplepiggy80

“(This sisterhood is) unconditional love and support without boundaries. All races, religions, and lifestyles (are) able to come together to support a cause, and mos of all, each other. I love the strength I have found within myself because of this sisterhood.”

“The Villainettes mean so much to me! As a single mom, I don’t get to go out very often, so, not many friends. This sisterhood has given me so many, not only friends, but sisters that feel close to me even if we live miles and miles away. They are there at 3:00 am ready to handle any concerns, problems, or rants we all have! To know so many sisters have my back and will push me to be my best self is beyond words! Knowing that I’m never alone in this world is such a blessing!”

“Villainettes means for me to have an extended family who loves and cares about me, as I do for them. It means friendship, in times where people no more believe in true friendship, neither true love. It’s a sign that there are still beautiful things to fight for in this world, and means that I will never be alone.”

We’ve not all met in person, but we’ve connected in such ways it’s as if we’ve met. It’s as if we’ve known each other for years. When we’re fortunate to meet in person, we’re filled with such overjoyous emotion! My sister! Oh how I’ve waited for this day to hug you!

“The Villainettes sisterhood is more than just a group of girls. They are my friends, my family, my support system, and my life. “With a preteen daughter who already has issues with girls, this sisterhood means so much to me because through it, I am able to show my daughter how things should be. The constant support and never ending love. She gets to see amazing women who support and empower one another instead of ripping each other apart.”

Courtney @choltramsey

Being part of The Villainettes is not a passing phase. It is a group of women who lift each other up, love one another, cry and laugh with, a true sisterhood. It is not a commitment in which you must make room in your life to add this in. It is a commitment that becomes a part of your very being without force. You will have women around the world to enrich your life as you enrich theirs. To be accepted into this group is to receive an embrace from family. Being part of The Villainettes is discovering family you didn’t know you had and being loved from day one despite any of your own trials or celebrations.

“ The Villainettes means unity, empowerment, self-worth, love, and family. It means no woman left behind. It means a better future for us in hopes of showing other women what it means to be loved by your fellow woman.”

Robyn @divine_vigor

“The Villainettes mean family and support. Showing love and showing how courageous we are. It shows community, relationships, and trust no matter your background and always having someone there for you.”

Aretta @nonnie_i_am

“This sisterhood is union, it is a continuous support that you can count on, even if we are so distant, we are very close. The strength of so many women, so different but so alike. Respect is unconditional trust. It is something great that I could never have imagined having the honor of being part of it. Every day a new discovery, a new wonderful reality!”

Lorenza @worriorlolla

“The Villainettes started out for me as something to help me stay sober. This sisterhood has become something so much more. Yes all my sisters keep me on my toes and do help to keep me clean and sober, but that’s not all of it anymore. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know some wonderful inspiring women. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know some wonderful inspiring women. I have the opportunity to still get to know even more. These amazing women have been my foundation of stone when my world was crumbling. You all have been there at my lowest and you didn’t even know what horrible things I would have done to myself, but it’s like you all just know. And it hasn't stopped. This really is a family, I’m not just a face in the crowd, I’m actually seen here and honestly my own blood family doesn’t see me most days. They certainly don’t recognize cries for help but you all know where I’ve been on some degree and you guys just act selflessly each time. That’s what I love the most, the selfless need to better all we come in contact with. When I was in treatment, I heard a speech. The man said always leave things better than you found them. It stuck with me. The Villainettes leave everything better than they find them and that kind of sparkle and self love in the world, I wanted to be a part of. The Villainettes is a selfless loving family from all walks of life, a tribe, warrior women lifting each other up. Lord knows you all have lifted me up when I just wanted to sink six feet lower. My love for you all is unending.”
